Welcome
Welcome to the Stafford County Animal Shelter, where we're dedicated to providing a safe haven for our beloved four-legged companions.
As an open admission facility, we welcome pets from all Stafford County residents. Our primary goal is to find loving homes for all adoptable animals in our care as swiftly as possible. Additionally, we serve as a temporary home for stray animals discovered within our county, working tirelessly to reunite them with their owners.

Important Update: Pet Surrenders Now by Appointment Only
Effective immediately, Stafford County Animal Shelter will only accept pet surrenders by appointment. If you are considering surrendering your cat or dog, please visit the shelter in person or call us. We will gather all the necessary information about you and your pet and then provide you with an appointment date. Please note that these appointments are subject to change depending on available space in the shelter, as we work diligently to avoid the need for euthanasia in our already overcrowded facility.
We understand that surrendering a pet is a difficult decision, and our team is here to support you through this process while prioritizing your pet’s well-being. Our goal is to equip you with all the necessary information before proceeding and to ensure that both you and your pet receive compassionate care.
Consider Alternatives Before Surrendering
While we strive to help as many animals as possible, our resources are limited. Before surrendering, we encourage you to consider other options:
-
Reaching out to friends or family for temporary or permanent care.
-
Contacting the rescue or breeder where your pet was adopted, as many have return policies.
-
Listing your pet for adoption on social media platforms such as Facebook or reputable rehoming websites like PetFinder.
Improving Your Pet’s Chances for Adoption
If you choose to surrender your pet to our shelter, we recommend ensuring that they are up to date on vaccinations and have been spayed or neutered. This not only improves their health but also increases their chances of finding a forever home quickly.
Helpful Information for Surrendering
There is no fee to surrender your pet, but we kindly ask that you provide any relevant medical records, documentation, and supplies. This will help us care for your pet and keep them comfortable during their stay at the shelter and their transition to a new home.
To ensure a smooth and efficient process, please contact us ahead of time to discuss the details and schedule your appointment. We’re here to help you explore all possible outcomes and ensure the best possible care for your pet.

Surrendering a Pet
We understand that sometimes circumstances arise that make it necessary to give up your beloved pet. We are here to assist you through this process. Before proceeding with surrendering your pet to the animal shelter, we would like to provide you with some helpful information to ensure a seamless transition for you, your pet and our staff.
We kindly request specific items when surrendering an animal:
1. A valid Driver's License or photo ID
2. Proof of Stafford County residency
3. Pertinent pet records such as medical records or documents from the place where you
acquired your pet.
4. A completed information form about your pet's habits and behaviors.
While it's not obligatory, ensuring your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and sterilized prior to surrender can significantly enhance their chances of finding a new, loving family. We greatly appreciate your assistance in this regard.
